White Boats and Turcotte Bridge: A Striking Work

For more than 25 years, customers of the restaurant Lambert de Sorel were able to admire the famous painting by Maurice Casavant, illustrating the white boats moored at the port of Sorel, on the Richelieu River, near the Turcotte Bridge. Since 1998, the work has been exhibited at Biophare, which recently had the opportunity to host this renowned painter from the region.

It was Pauline Lambert, then owner of the restaurant Lambert and friend of Mr. Casavant, who had ordered this painting at the time. The painter, now 96 years old, was inspired by a photograph, in black and white, of a winter scene featuring white boats, which marked the imagination of the Sorelois.
He painted the painting in 1963, which was seen by the restaurant's clients until 1987, when a fire ravaged the establishment, damaging the painting. Blackened by the smoke, it had been retouched by Mr. Casavant to restore it.

Maurice Casavant made his home in Sorel in 1944. After two years at Marine Industries, he worked as a letterer in the region.
